Robustness margin of the hot-dip galvanizing control system
    (2003-01-01)
This paper presents new results to compute the robustness margin of the Hot-Dip Galvanizing control system. Compared to previous works on this issue, this paper considers a mathematical model of the plant with two inputs, used to control the system and one output. The present work bases its results on the value set characterization for interval plants with uncertain time delay along with the use of the zero exclusion principle to compute the robustness margin of the close loop system.

Technology gap among suppliers and Pop & Mom stores as a key distribution cost issue
    (2008-01-01)
A Pop & Mom Store segment of around 450 000 business is an important market for large Multinational Corporations and medium size firms involved in the retail goods production business in Mexico. As large and medium size suppliers are fully integrated to technology based processes, and working under supply chain management practices, in the distribution side of the value chain are the Pop & Mom stores representing an important economic group of business with asymmetries in regard of the adoption of basic Information Technology to align with their business parties. Little is known about the challenges faced by Pop & Mom stores in developing countries to integrate Information Technology components to their business processes such as suppliers and inventory management. Results of a study conducted in a middle size city in the Northeast Region of Mexico suggest that due to the technology gap existing among them and their large suppliers, increasing distribution costs are threatening the survival of this business model while suppliers are focusing their attention on the convenience stores model operating upon technology based processes.

Experimental evidence of Non-linear dissipation using Acoustic Micro-Lapses
    (DEStech Publications, 2009-01-01)
Non-linear material behaviour is observed experimentally in a laboratory using a new method called Acoustic Micro-Lapses (AML). In this approach, the shooting of two waves is synchronised in a way that the second wave (TW) is to sense the fluctuations in material stiffness induced by the first (PW). The tests include four samples; twenty trials are performed for each sample by increasing time-delays between the waves. The recorded waves are decoupled and compared to determine spectral differences by computing a quantity proportional to the energy difference as function of the increasing time delay (EmΔt). For a tight sandstone and aluminium samples, the random behaviour of EmΔt implies that TW finds the same equilibrium conditions as PW. The Lucite and the Berea sandstone depict distinct maxima, implying that TW sensed the transitory perturbations induced by PW. Therefore, it is inferred that PW and TW must propagate with different phase speeds. To assess the previous results, quasi-static modelling is performed using two time delayed step functions. The corresponding creep compliance shows a strong discontinuity when the second step is applied, implying the existence of two unrelaxed moduli. This supports the lab data in that the two waves must have different dispersion relations such that they propagate with different speeds.

High Kerr optical nonlinearity observed in a liquid crystal by Z-scan technique
    (2007-01-01)
In this paper we present the preliminary experimental results about the measuring of Kerr optical nonlinearity in a 5CB liquid crystal sample doped with methyl-yellow at 1 %. These results are obtenided througth Z-scan tecnhique using a simple low power He-Ne laser in CW operation. We observe a great negative Kerr nonlinearity in the sample obtained in the regime temperature of nematic phase. For upper temperature, we observe a notable decreasing of the optical nonlinearity due to sample change to isotropic phase. In adition, we observe the presence of a nonlinear absorption contribution.

Preliminary assessment of water quality in the Rio Grande in the Laredo-Nuevo Laredo region
    (2007-01-01)
This work evaluated water quality of the Rio Grande at Nuevo Laredo, Mexico and Laredo, Texas, an area stressed by the rapid population growth of the border region and the maquiladora industry. This study examined physical, chemical and bacteriological parameters, as well as total metals, volatile organic compounds (VOC) and semi-volatile organic compounds (SVOC) from surface water samples collected from sites along the river and at potable water and residual water sites over the course of one week. The study found oil and grease and aluminum concentrations above permissible limits and numerous unregulated elements.
