“Green gold”, education and insecurity in medium cities: Ciudad Guzman and Uruapan, Mexico

| Resumen | Mexico has positioned itself as one of the main avocado producers in the world, an activity that has generated millionaire income for producers. In this article, we analyze the possible cause that generates the current differences in the insecurity rates reported in the Crime Stoplight of two medium cities in Mexico: Uruapan and Ciudad Guzmán, both producers of avocado, a fruit also known as “green gold”. The study methodology was of a comparative and descriptive nature, when studying and comparing the sociodemographic characteristics of the two cities mentioned. Among the results, they stand out that the existing difference in security matters cannot be explained by the religious perspective, nor by the ethnic origin of the majority of its inhabitants, the existing level of impunity cannot explain the differences between the two cities; What makes Ciudad Guzmán one of the safest middle cities in the state of Jalisco is education; Furthermore, despite being much smaller than Uruapan, it has a wide cultural offer. It is concluded that the differences in terms of insecurity in both avocado cities are mainly due to the different prevailing educational levels, that is, education plays an important role as a differentiating element. | es_ES |
