Abstract

Introduction: Gastrointestinal stromal tumors are the first solid neoplasm which oncogenesis has allowed a successful molecular targeted therapy. However, in Mexico there are no concrete statistics about its annual prevalence, incidence, morbidity or mortality. A study concerning to the Mexican population is therefore required to obtain data of interest from our population. The aim of this study was to estimate the incidence of gastrointestinal stromal tumors in the Mexican population. Material and Methods: A systematic review of the PubMed database was performed. The articles cataloged as “originals” in Spanish or English were selected. Studies with no description about the population or region in where the primary uptake took place were excluded. Given the studies heterogeneity, a formal meta-analysis was not made, instead descriptive statistics were used to perform an objective characteristics analysis. Results: Ten studies conducted on Mexican population were identified; 649 cases with confirmed diagnosis by different immunohistochemical tests were reported. On the basis of the population data for the 1980s, it was calculated an accumulative incidence of 9.7 cases per million inhabitants. The reported age ranged from 5 to 96 years, with an average age of 55-56 years for most studies (μ = 56,734, SD = 3.11). Sex distribution showed a relationship between female (n = 331) and males patients (n = 318) of 0.960.
