Abstract

Introduction: The last national addictions inquiry in Mexico showed that almost a million teenagers were smokers. Results from the drugs consumption test in schools from Mexico done in 2003 showed that 51% of men 50% of women of high school had consumed tobacco at some time in their life. To describe some variables related to the consumption of tobacco and some demographic factors. Method: high school students from scholar cycle 20062007 design was probabilistic, stratified and randomized. An autoapplicable questionnaire was used. Results: 3142 pupils were polled, 53.6% correspond to the feminine sex, average of age 16.3 years, 35.8% initiates the consumption of tobacco between 13 and 15 years old, 58.9% has smoked at sometime in their life, 41% in the last 12 months and 28.1% in the last 30 days, 10.2 % think that it is not dangerous to smoke, 3.2% of the smokers have criteria to consider them as nicotine addicts. Conclusion: it is necessary to increase the preventive campaigns and the detection of cases especially the complicated ones.
