| Resumen | To study the effects of duration of treatment with norgestomet on life span of the corpus luteum induced by hCG, 14 prepubertal Bos taurus X Bos indicus heifers with an age of 10.3 +/- 2.9 months (mean +/- SEM), weighing 183.8 +/- 29 kg, and in moderate to poor body condition, were randomly assigned to receive one of three norgestomet treatments: five heifers received an implant for 9 days, five additional heifers received two consecutive implants for a total duration of 18 days; the remaining four heifers received five consecutive implants for a duration of 45 days. Thirty-six hours after the removal of the last implant in a group, all animals in the group were treated with 1000 IU of hCG. Blood samples were collected to determine concentrations of progesterone two days before the insertion of the implants, at the time of insertion and removal of implants, at the time of hCG treatment and every other day until 23 days after hCG treatment. A corpus luteum was considered to have formed if the concentrations of progesterone after hCG treatment were greater than the mean +/- 3SD of the samples collected at the time of insertion, removal and administration of hCG. No differences (P > 0.05) were observed in the number of heifers that formed a corpus luteum after hCG treatment (total response 57\%). The life span of the corpus luteum formed after hCG treatment were 7.3 +/- 3.1, 17 +/- 1.4 and 14.7 +/- 1.2 days for 9, 18 and 45 days of norgestomet treatment, respectively (P < 0.05). The time to the first increase in progesterone after administration of hCG was delayed (P < 0.05) in the 45 day treatment (5.6 +/- 1.2, 5 +/- 0 and 8.3 +/- 1.2 for 9, 18 and 45 days of norgestomet, respectively). It is concluded that the life span of the corpus luteum induced by hCG in Bos taurus X Bos indicus heifers could be affected by the length of norgestomet treatment, and that the formation of corpus luteum is delayed when norgestomet treatment is prolonged to 45 days. | es_ES |
