High temperature oxidation-sulfidation of Cr-Zr02-AI 2O3 composite fabricated by mechanical alloying and spark plasma sintering
Abstract
The high temperature oxidation-sulfidation resistance of Cr-ZrO 2-Al2O3 composites fabricated by mechanical alloying (MA) and spark plasma sintering (SPS) has been evaluated. Composite powders were prepared by ball milling Cr-5vol%ZrO2-50vol%Ai 2O3, for 7 hours. Powders were then compacted by SPS in less than 5 min, so that a particular metal-ceramic interpenetrating network has been obtained. The high temperature oxidation-sulfidation tests (700-900°C) conducted under 0.25%SO2+3.6%O2+N2 (balance) atmosphere have revealed a good oxidation-sulfidation resistance (0.35, 1.17 and 1.8 mg/cm2 at 700, 800 and 900°C respectively for 48 hours) since a protective Cr2O3 layer forms upon heating. The significance of the obtained results concerns the design and development of sulfidation resistant alloys.
