ResumenMultispectral cameras are a useful tool for evaluating cultivated areas, but their use in natural areas is limited. Using vegetation indices generated from multispectral images, obtained with an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV), the health of the vegetation surrounding the Taninul (mTa) and Mainero Azufroso (mMA) springs (San Luis Potosí and Tamaulipas respectively) was evaluated. Digital images were aligned and interpolated to generate a three-band model (RGB), a digital elevation model (DEM) and an orthomosaic, Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), Soil-Adjusted Vegetation Index (SAVI) and Green Chlorophyll Index (GCI) was calculated. mTa showed a modified vegetation layer with very healthy vegetation values (0.66 to 1) at the top and dead plants or inanimate objects (-1 to 0) at the bottom and moderately healthy vegetation (0.66 to 0) was observed on the slope (0.33 to 0.66). mMA, located between two slopes, presented intact vegetation with values between moderately healthy (0.33 to 0.66) to healthy (0.66 to 1.00); SAVI presented some empty spaces due more to the reflectance of the images than to altered sites. GCI values were higher for mMA than for mTa (≈1), indicating significant photosynthetic activity. Although it was expected that the presence of the springs would improve the health status of the vegetation, the mTa area showed diseased to moderately healthy vegetation and mMA exhibited dense vegetation and good health. mMA analysis presented more challenges due to slopes in light reflectance, this was moderately corrected by editing the light intensity due to underexposure in the images.es_ES
