Abstract

INTRODUCTION. The participation of nursing professionals in educational institutions is a priority need for the care of adolescent populations at risk of adopting unhealthy behaviors, such as the consumption of addictive substances. OBJECTIVE. To analyze the definition of the concept of Advanced Practice Nursing in Addiction Prevention to understand the role of nursing as a strategy in preventing substance abuse in adolescents and to highlight the need for its practice in the social context. METHOD. Following Beth L. Rodgers' methodology, a search was conducted in digital databases, which allowed us to understand the role of the nursing professional in addressing substance use through identifying the background, attributes, main interventions in educational institutions, and the conceptualization of the concept in Latin America. RESULT. The resulting conceptual framework shows the attributes of the nursing professional role, which include: specialized counseling, early detection of addictive substance use, holistic care, mastery of knowledge in addictions, communication skills, referral to specialized resources, formation of multidisciplinary teams, design of programs with individual, family, and community scope that promote healthy behaviors and lifestyles; all of which are based on an integrated approach with a preventive focus aimed at adolescents. CONCLUSION. The consolidation of Advanced Practice Nursing in Addiction Prevention from a conceptual perspective is imperative to guide independent professional practice in the field of addictions.
