ResumenThe term knowledge economy was coined in 1996 by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development [OECD], for the group of industrialized countries where knowledge was recognized as the key factor of economic growth [World Bank Institute, 2007]. The knowledge society is a form of social and economic organization characterized by significant technological advancement that enables an intensive use of information; it adds value to goods through advances in knowledge, innovation, technology, and information; it tends to reduce the costs of information transmission and has a greater capacity for physical storage, and is based on respecting the rights of the population to: have higher levels of education, access to better information for decision-making, and improve their quality of life [Castellanos & Rodríguez, 2005].es_ES
