Open assessment of the cumulative dose of itraconozole in patients with tinea pedis
Abstract
An open prospective study was carried out on 39 junior high school students (14 males, 25 females) between 12 and 17 years old. The objective of the study was to evaluate the effectiveness and safety of an accumulated dose schedule of itraconazole for the treatment of tinea pedis corroborated with myocologic diagnosis. The patients received 300 mg of itraconazole daily for seven days. Average clinical effectiveness at the end of the treatment was 72.5% with higher healing indexes for vesicles, ardor, erythema and pruritus. Follow-up was done for an additional week in order to assess the effect of itraconazole deposits in skin. Lesions continued to heal achieving a global effectiveness index of 84.1%; scaling persisting as remains of the disease. Post-therapy direct examination and pathogen culture were negative in all patients. No adverse effects occurred.
