Labour migration within the Mexican republic: a geospatial analysis for the population of Mazatlán, Sinaloa
Abstract
The objective of this paper is to carry out a geospatial analysis of migration dynamics based on census information. For this purpose, a model of interstate population interaction flows is carried out using Geographic Information Systems (GIS). The findings indicate that a large part of Mazatlan's population migrates to entities in the western part of the country (Jalisco and Nayarit), while another part migrates to other entities in the northwest (Baja California) and southeast (Yucatan Peninsula). The importance of knowing the migratory flows of the Sinaloan population becomes relevant when identifying the main characteristics (economic activities) of those entities to which Sinaloans decide to migrate for labor reasons. It is also important to know the main sociodemographic variables of the Sinaloan population that migrates to other states. Incidentally, by identifying the above key factors, it is possible to design public policy strategies to conserve human capital in the state of Sinaloa with internal proposals and reduce migration.
