Prevalence and factors associates to chronic urticaria. Analysis of the allergic rhinitis and symptoms related to asthma as a factors associated to chronic urticaria in a urban area of northeastern of Mexico
Abstract
Objective: To determine the prevalence, possible associates factors and participation level of the allergic rhinitis and symptoms related to asthma in the presentation of chronic urticaria. Methods: Written questionnaires were distributed to 3000 persons select at random, from the ages of 20-50 years, women and man. We made up two groups from the total sampled, one with disease and the other with asymptomatic subjects. This is a retrospective, observational, open, and transversal case-control study. Results: 2613 questionnaires had complete information, response rate 87.1%. In this population, 788 reported experiencing or having experienced urticaria at some time during their life. Urticaria chronic prevalence was 3.4%, females sex were more affected (67.8, OR = 1.44, p = NS), in 14.4% symptoms continue at nigth and 18.9% worsening with exercise. Potencial causes that we found were foods (10% p = NS), and drugs (8.9%, p = NS), 81.1% unknown cause. Persons that had urticaria chronic, had relative with allergy (62.2%, OR = 2.51), and additionally suffered from allergic rhinitis (53.3%, OR = 1.81), wheezing (32.2%, OR = 2.10), and dry cough (26.7%, OR = 1.62). Conclusions: The prevalence of the urticaria chronic documented, is greater than the other autors reports. And the familiar history of allergy, allergic rhinitis and asthma-related symptoms antecedent may have connection on the chronic urticaria in the northeastern of México.
