For what has been considered that the implementation of strategy favors its development–in this sense– this research aims to identify the types of strategy followed by SMEs, and compare the typology between two cities in northern Mexico with different environmental conditions. The study was conducted in 190 companies from northern Mexico using cluster methodology and chi square tests. The results allowed to identify that there are significant differences in the selection of the strategy according to the city in which the company operates, noting that in the region with a more dynamic sector and competitive environment companies opt for exploratory and defensive strategies, while in regions with little dynamic environment opts for reactive strategies.
